Abstract
We analysed the usage of blood components in infants at Severance hospotal in 1990. The 1,762 units of blood components (whole blood: 235 units, packed red blood cell: 1,052 unit, fresh frozen plasma: 389 units, and platelet concentrates: 86
units)
were
transfused to 431 patients.
Fourty percent of red blood cell coponents were used in surgical department, the remainder were transfused to those suffering from low birth weight, neonatal hyperbilirubinemia, and chronic cardiovascular diseases. 389 units of fresh frozen
plasma
were
transtused to 115 pateients, and the majority of FFP were exclusively used to treat hypovolemia during surgical procedures. Platelet concnetrates were given to prevent the expected bleeding to the septic or oncohematology patients.
The retrospective review of medical records were not sufficient to judge the optimal use of blood components because there are many situations based on individual factors for given patients. However becoause the amount of blood requested for
neonatal
recipients were relatively small in our study, considered to represent the usage of blood components in a tertiary care hospients, we concluded it is desirable that the unique small volume units neonatal recipients are supplied by the central red
cross,
not by the independent hospital based institures.
